
The rapid advancement of modern biotechnology has opened new opportunities for accelerating livestock breeding programs and improving genetic quality in Indonesia. In support of these developments, Nur Akbar Arofatullah, S.P., M.Biotech., Ph.D., a lecturer in Agricultural Microbiology at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has been actively involved in discussions and explorations of DNA synthesis (DNA printing) technology and Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP)-based molecular diagnostic methods together with international industry partners and experts.
In a post shared by Clive Pickering, who is involved in the Dairy Breeding Acceleration Program to Improve Genetic Quality and Milk Production in Indonesia, Colorimetric LAMP technology was highlighted for its robust and rapid design, development, and implementation workflow. The technology is expected to help address one of the major challenges in livestock breeding programs, namely the availability of faster, more accurate, and field-applicable DNA identification and testing methods.

Beyond discussions on molecular diagnostic technologies, the meeting also provided an opportunity to explore recent advances in DNA synthesis, or synthetic DNA printing, which is increasingly being adopted worldwide. This technology enables the precise design and synthesis of DNA sequences for a wide range of applications, including molecular biology research, genetic engineering, diagnostic kit development, and agricultural and livestock biotechnology. According to Clive Pickering, witnessing DNA synthesis technology firsthand was an extraordinary experience, comparable to seeing science fiction concepts from the 1930s–1950s come to life in the modern era.
For the agricultural and livestock sectors, advances in genomics and DNA synthesis hold significant potential for supporting genetic identification, elite breeding selection, rapid disease detection systems, and improvements in productivity and product quality. Collaboration among academia, industry, and international partners is essential to accelerate the adoption of these innovations and ensure that they generate tangible benefits for Indonesia’s agricultural and livestock industries.
Through initiatives such as this, the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada continues to strengthen its role in advancing science and technology while fostering international partnerships that contribute to innovative solutions for future agricultural and food security challenges. The recognition expressed by international partners further highlights the growing contribution of UGM researchers to the development and application of cutting-edge biotechnology in Indonesia and beyond.
