The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through the Department of Agricultural Microbiology, is once again offering an opportunity for international students to participate in the Municipal Waste Management: Workshop and Field Trip 2026 program. This program is part of the implementation of UGM’s Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN), which promotes a collaborative approach involving academics, international students, and local communities in supporting sustainable community-based waste management. The international program will be held from 20–26 July 2026 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, under the theme “Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Waste Solutions.”
SDG 11: SUSTINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating sustainable environmental solutions through community empowerment. One of the programs led by Prof. Irfan Dwidya Prijambada has successfully secured funding under the EQUITY Community Development Program 2026 to develop a community-based waste management model through international collaboration. According to the funding announcement from UGM’s Directorate of Community Service, the project is entitled “Community Development for Sustainable Waste Management: A Collaborative International Student Program in Yogyakarta.”
The Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) continues to support students in gaining meaningful learning experiences beyond the classroom through direct engagement with communities. One example is student participation in the SUIJI Service Learning Program (SUIJI-SLP), an international exchange program that combines academic learning, field observation, problem-solving, and cross-cultural exchange through a service-learning approach.

Muhammad Syahru Ramadhan, a student of the Faculty of Agriculture UGM, had the opportunity to participate in the SUIJI-SLP program, which brought together students from various universities in Indonesia and Japan. The program involved participants from UGM, IPB University, Hasanuddin University, and Kagawa University in Japan. Through this exchange experience, Syahru gained valuable insights from academic activities, community observations, and collaborative problem-solving initiatives. According to him, every activity within the program was meaningful and impactful because SUIJI-SLP emphasizes learning through direct community engagement. “During the exchange program, I gained many valuable experiences, ranging from learning activities to problem-solving processes. In my opinion, every agenda in SUIJI-SLP felt meaningful and beneficial because the program focuses on Service Learning,” said Syahru.
The Community Service and Empowerment Program (KKN-PPM) Period II 2025 of Universitas Gadjah Mada was successfully carried out by one of the Agricultural Microbiology students of the 2022 cohort, Ilyasa Ilham, for 50 days from June 20 to August 8, 2025 in Silaut Subdistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra. KKN-PPM is a compulsory course that enables students to directly apply their academic knowledge within society. Through this program, students are encouraged to live among the community while making tangible contributions to both the prevention and resolution of local challenges.
A student from the Agricultural Microbiology Study Program at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) class of 2021, Muhammad Prakosa Damarsejati, participated in the Community Empowerment Service Learning Program (KKN-PPM) for the second period of 2024 in Palingkau Asri Village, Kapuas Murung District, Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan. This KKN activity is a mandatory program included in the intramural activities that implement the tri dharma of higher education: education, research, and community service. It provides students with the experience of learning and working in community development activities as a medium for applying and developing science and technology outside the campus, according to the needs of the region, within a predetermined work mechanism.
One of the Agricultural Microbiology students from the 2021 cohort, Erina Tika Febiyanti, who is commonly known as Erina, has just completed her Community Service-Learning and Community Empowerment Program (KKN-PPM) for the second period of 2024 in Dusun Badat Lama, Suruh Tembawang Village, Entikong Sub-district, Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan. This KKN activity is a mandatory course that provides students with the opportunity to directly apply their field of study to help solve problems that arise in the community. According to Erina, the KKN program encourages students to broaden their perspectives, engage dynamically with the community to observe existing challenges, and solve those challenges by empowering local residents. Erina believes that the 50-day period for the community service program is not enough to fully resolve all the existing issues, but it is sufficient to initiate positive change, both for herself as a student and for the community to become more empowered in improving their well-being.
One of the Microbiology students from the 2020 cohort, Uways Irfany, commonly known as Uways, has just completed the Community Empowerment Learning Work Lecture (KKN-PPM) period IV of the year 2023/2024 in Paka Village, Satar Mese District, Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. This KKN activity is one of the compulsory courses that provide opportunities for students to directly apply their discipline in helping to address community issues. According to Uways, the KKN program encourages students to step out of their comfort zone, observe the challenges faced by the community, and contribute effectively to solving these challenges together with students from other disciplines as well as with the local community. Although the 50-day service period may seem very short, Uways believes it is enough to initiate positive change not only for himself as a student but also for the community to become more empowered.
