Two students from the Department of Agricultural Microbiology, Uways Irfany Adiprawira and Yori Idmaldi Arif, received a valuable opportunity to participate in the Sakura Science Program (SSP) organized by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Over the course of 12 days, starting on November 4, 2025, they experienced firsthand the academic atmosphere at Ibaraki University, Japan. The program, titled “New Approaches to Disease Control in Tropical Crops,” was not just an ordinary training activity—it was a comprehensive immersion that combined learning, experimentation, and exploration of Japanese culture and technological advancement.
For me, one of the most remarkable aspects was the direct experience of having easy access to advanced research instruments. These highly supportive facilities were truly a game-changer. They not only simplified practical work but also broadened my perspective on how strong infrastructure can drive innovation and accelerate learning. The enthusiasm for research felt even more invigorated when all the necessary tools were readily available.
What impressed me even more was Japan’s ability to maintain harmony between tradition and modernity. Amid rapid technological and scientific progress, traditional culture continues to be preserved and honored. This phenomenon offers a valuable reflection for all of us. It resonates deeply with our university’s slogan, “Rooted Strongly, Soaring High,”—a philosophy that is evidently lived and practiced in Japan.
As an alumnus of this program, my greatest hope is that opportunities for studying abroad will continue to expand for Indonesian students. Experiences like this are not only about gaining knowledge but also about enriching perspectives and building character. With stronger foundations, future generations will be prepared not only to excel in their respective fields but also to become wise agents of change who can advance Indonesia without losing its identity.
