On Wednesday, 24 May 2023, the Department of Microbiology together with hackteria.org held a workshop entitled GOSH Global LAMP – Open Fluorescence Meter Workshop: Simple electronic workshop which is a form of training in making open fluorescence meters using simple electronic tools. This workshop was delivered by Dr. Marc R. Dusseiller a representative from hackteria.org to provide knowledge about various electronic and laboratory equipment that can be assembled by yourself at a low cost so that laboratory equipment can be more accessible. Apart from the Microbiology Department, this workshop has also been held at several institutions in several countries with similar topics. This activity was attended by more than 20 Agricultural Microbiology students and was divided into several sessions, which included presentations of materials and demonstrations of laboratory tools that were successfully made with simple electronic devices, as well as hands-on practice of making simple fluorescence meters.
One of the training participants, Mu’adz Fikri Gunawan, shared his experience after attending an open fluorescence meter workshop. For Mu’adz Fikri Gunawan, attending fluorescence meter assembly training is a new and unique experience where laboratory equipment commonly found in laboratories can be empowered through simple electronic devices that are all around us. “Overall, this workshop was an exciting experience where this training provided basic knowledge about electronics, fluorescence meters, and practical skills in assembling and testing fluorescence meters. It is hoped that with this workshop, young researchers will have a greater enthusiasm for innovation and creativity in conducting research by utilizing facilities that are easy to obtain.”
