The Department of Agricultural Microbiology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), continues to conduct undergraduate thesis defenses as part of the final stage of the bachelor’s degree program. On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 09.00 AM WIB, student Muhammad Sativa Arsya presented his thesis defense at the Agricultural Microbiology Library, AGLC 4th floor.

Arsya’s thesis, entitled “The Ability of A. baumannii, R. straminoryzae, and P. simplex in Supporting the Growth of Spirodela polyrhiza as a Phytoremediation Agent for Acetonitrile Waste”, focuses on the role of three bacterial species in enhancing the phytoremediation capacity of Spirodela polyrhiza (duckweed) in acetonitrile-contaminated environments.

Acetonitrile is recognized as an industrial waste compound that poses significant environmental threats due to its toxicity and persistence. A biotechnological approach that integrates microorganisms with aquatic plants offers a strategic alternative for reducing its impact. By harnessing the abilities of Acinetobacter baumannii, Rhizobium straminoryzae, and Pseudomonas simplex, this research is expected to contribute to the development of environmentally friendly phytoremediation technologies.

The findings not only enrich studies in agricultural microbiology and environmental biotechnology but also align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
