The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through the Department of Agricultural Microbiology, is once again offering an opportunity for international students to participate in the Municipal Waste Management: Workshop and Field Trip 2026 program. This program is part of the implementation of UGM’s Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN), which promotes a collaborative approach involving academics, international students, and local communities in supporting sustainable community-based waste management. The international program will be held from 20–26 July 2026 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, under the theme “Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Waste Solutions.”
The program is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive learning experience in sustainable waste management through a combination of workshops, discussions, field visits, and direct engagement with local communities and various stakeholders involved in environmental management. Participants will gain insights into the challenges and practical solutions related to urban waste management, particularly those implemented in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
Through an experiential learning approach, participants will not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also have the opportunity to observe firsthand waste management practices, community empowerment initiatives, and innovative approaches that contribute to sustainable environmental development. The program aims to enhance participants’ understanding of the importance of collaboration among academia, government institutions, local communities, and the private sector in addressing environmental challenges.
In addition to workshops and field visits, the program will serve as a platform for cultural exchange and knowledge sharing among students from different countries. These cross-cultural interactions are expected to broaden participants’ global perspectives while strengthening international networks that will be valuable for their future academic and professional development.
Looking ahead, the program is expected to become a sustainable international learning platform while further strengthening Universitas Gadjah Mada’s role in fostering global collaboration to address environmental challenges. Through the active involvement of international students and local communities, the initiative is expected to facilitate meaningful knowledge exchange, expand international partnerships, and nurture future leaders who are committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. Beyond creating positive impacts for local communities, the program is also expected to inspire participants to develop innovative waste management solutions that can be adapted and implemented in their respective countries and communities.
This program also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
